Before the Bell
Stock futures are pointing sideways. But the trading day hasn't started, and there are still economic numbers to crunch and bad news from Dell to digest. "Dude, you're gettin' your annual report late," was the message from the computer maker late yesterday, after an internal audit found accounting errors and evidence of misconduct in its finance controls.
The major economic news is the release of core personal consumption expenditure data, the Fed's favorite inflation gauge. Also on tap: the Chicagoland business activity survey and the University of Michigan's final reading on consumer sentiment. U.S. Treasuries are flat, and the dollar is steady against the yen and euro.Another day, another milestone for oil prices, which are now past $66.50 a barrel on the double whammy of the detainment of British sailors and marines in Iran and a labor strike in France.
Do private equity firms ever sleep? Texas Pacific Group is bidding $4.5 billion for Spanish airline Iberia, British pharmacy chain Alliance Boots has a sweetened bid from its deputy chairman and Kohlberg Kravis Roberts, and Britain's Times is reporting that the private equity arm of Goldman Sachs is sizing up a bid this year for European home-improvement chain Kingfisher.
Not to be outdone, Citigroup is seeking acquisitions in Germany and could swoop down on a big bank, the executive in charge of that market tells Reuters. On the divesting side, hedge fund Man Group is planning to spin off its U.S. brokerage and take it public.

Before the Bell
Stock futures are pointing higher because after a few days of declines, share prices are looking appealing. But let's not get ahead of ourselves. There's still the Iran conflict, and it's extremely doubtful that Fed chief Ben Bernanke - who drove down the market yesterday by voicing concern about inflation - has reversed his position overnight.
Today's economic agenda includes speeches from other Fed officials and the final reading on fourth-quarter gross domestic product. U.S. Treasuries are lower.
The dollar is down against the euro on worries about the U.S. economy. Oil is holding above $64 a barrel as 15 British sailors remain in Iranian custody. Canada's Globe and Mail is reporting that buyout firm Kohlberg Kravis Roberts has its eye on telecommunications conglomerate BCE.
Family Dollar reported quarterly earnings that exceeded Wall Street estimates - which were lowered after the discount retailer said earlier this month that results would come in at the low end of its forecast.

Before the Bell
The Fed has been one of the biggest boosters of the stock market lately, but everyone's going to be watching Chairman Ben Bernanke's testimony before a congressional committee to see whether the central bank really is kinder and gentler. Risk aversion is permeating the forex market as well.
The dollar is down against the yen. Oil, on the other hand, is soaring on anxiety over supplies from Iran and other Gulf nations. U.S. crude isn't far from $65 a barrel. U.S. Treasuries are steady. Mortgage applications fell last week on lower demand for refinancings, although purchase activity barely budged. A source says GM isn't likely to make a first-round bid for Chrysler, leaving only private equity firms and auto parts supplier Magna in the running. Organized labor is raising its voice.
The United Auto Workers is vowing to strike at Delphi if the bankrupt parts company voids its labor contract. And unions are demanding their fair share at United Airlines after learning that its parent's CEO got paid nearly $40 million last year.
In more corporate turmoil, semiconductor maker Atmel says its former CEO is trying to replace the board members who had fired him.

Confiança do Consumidor Americano

Before the Bell
Stock futures are pointing down ahead of consumer confidence data that's going to show whether the subprime mortgage crisis is bumming you out about the economy in general. And while we're on the subject of housing, Lennar is also putting the market in a tizzy.
The home builder reported a sharper-than-expected drop in quarterly profit and scrapped its 2007 outlook. The downbeat stock market is helping U.S. Treasuries build on gains from yesterday, when weak housing data revived expectations of an interest-rate cut. But the Fed is more concerned about inflation than slow economic growth, the president of its Chicago branch said in Beijing.
The dollar has steadied against European currencies.
Oil prices have eased from their 2007 high set yesterday, but they're still around $62.50. A strike in the French Mediterranean oil port of Fos-Lavera, now in its 14th day, is beginning to hit refinery output ahead of the summer driving season. Talk about ambivalence.
According to the Times in London, the chairman of Sanofi-Aventis says the French drug maker should buy Bristol-Myers, while its CEO says it shouldn't.

Tam & Gol
Elas caíram 3,15%, a terceira maior baixa do Ibovespa.

Before the Bell
Investors are also cautious after stocks made some big gains last week, and futures are pointing sideways. After existing-home sales came in surprisingly strong on Friday, the spotlight turns to new housing shortly after the opening bell.
Sales may or may not be all well and good, but a report forecasts a 33 percent jump in foreclosures this year.
The dollar is up against the yen and euro. U.S. Treasuries are down a bit.
Oil prices are likely to provide a lift for energy shares. U.S. crude is just below $63 a barrel, a record for the year, as Iran's capture of British servicemen highlights tensions over the nation's nuclear program.
There's a good bit of M&A news, but it's not fazing the market. A source says Saudi Basic Industries might bid for General Electric's plastics unit. Anglo-Swiss Xstrata is buying Canada's LionOre Mining for $4 billion. And biomedical testing equipment maker Beckman Coulter is purchasing Biosite for $1.55 billion.
The Wall Street Journal says Citigroup executives are putting the finishing touches on a restructuring plan that's likely to include about 15,000 job cuts and a $1 billion charge. It looks like breakfast at Tiffany's should be fairly festive this morning.
Earnings came in a couple of cents above analysts' estimates, and revenue was higher than expected.

Sadia - Estudo

https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh56dqrIPYZIkMHfuiJKLRef47jxuCLHEczIj6dDjxGYL4OBTpAI0N3HnbUmq2uR6jeOhAmW3Xq5BiTMX6BYZSmbtZoMsO7caIhIQ2L2LjJmiCtg1x8T9KmioBhR-CaQY6fwsoLM2Gskyk/s400/sdiasem.gif

Before the Bell
Stock futures are pointing sideways. Investors are still smiling over news of Blackstone's $4 billion IPO, which broke just before yesterday's market close. And it probably can't hurt that The Wall Street Journal is saying some Citigroup executives are pushing the company to bid for ABN Amro, which is in merger talks with Barclays.
Of course, existing home sales data from the National Association of Realtors shortly afer the opening bell could burst or expand the stock market's fragile confidence. Speaking of housing, mortgage finance company Freddie Mac reported a $480 million quarterly loss.
U.S. Treasuries are up a bit as they retrace losses that stemmed from growing doubts about an imminent cut in interest rates. The dollar is steady against other major currencies.
Oil is down toward $61 a barrel, but those falling gasoline inventories are providing support.
In more M&A, GE says it's offering $1.14 billion for Japanese leasing company Sanyo Electric Credit.
And a Dutch newspaper says retailer Ahold has invited Sysco to bid for its U.S. Foodservice unit.
The auto industry's woes may have left Detroit in shambles, but GM management has reason to be happy. The company is giving stock bonuses to top executives, including CEO Rick Wagoner, for the first time since 2003.

Before the Bell
Stock futures are pointing flat to lower, with higher oil prices also keeping the market from gaining traction. U.S. crude is up near $61 a barrel on a sharp drop in gasoline supplies.
U.S. Treasuries are down as yesterday's Fed policy statement, which many say paves the way for lower interest rates this year, encouraged investors to venture into riskier markets.
The same thing is happening in forex, where the dollar is up against the yen and the Swiss franc.
Here's food for encouraging thought: Cereal maker General Mills has raised its full-year outlook for the second time in three months, while ConAgra reported higher-than-expected profit.
Wal-Mart has announced bonus plans to reward store employees for longtime tenure and customer service.
The subprime sage drags on. A Senate committee is holding a hearing today, and federal banking regulators and executives at top lending companies are likely to face tough questions.

Before the Bell
Stock futures are pointing sideways since the market has hours to wait until the Fed makes its pronouncement on interest rates.
No one's expecting rate hike, but everyone wants to hear the outlook, especially given the recent subprime meltdown.
The dollar is up against the yen, and U.S. Treasuries are flat to lower.
The shift to an ostensibly warmer season isn't bringing oil prices down. U.S. crude is up near $60 a barrel because in spring a car owner's fancy turns to driving and data coming out today is likely to show a further drop in gasoline stockpiles.
Mortgage applications fell last week for the first time in a month as consumers lost their appetite for both refinancings and purchases.
It could be a nice day on the tech side. Shares of Oracle and Adobe Systems are both up after they posted better-than-expected results late yesterday.
Morgan Stanley just reported sharply higher earnings.
Stay tuned for results from FedEx.
